NLMK Kaluga smelted two millionth ton of steel

NLMK Kaluga, a new generation electrometallurgical plant, celebrated the production of its two millionth ton of steel. NLMK Kaluga was commissioned in 2013 and since then has been producing a wide range of long products for the construction sector. The plant is part of the NLMK Group and was created as a mini-plant with an electric steel-making and rolling production located in close proximity to raw materials and end consumers.

In the technological processes of the plant, innovative solutions are used that ensure a high level of production while meeting progressive requirements for quality, environmental safety and resource conservation. Therefore, among electrometallurgical enterprises, NLMK Kaluga is rightfully considered the leader in terms of energy efficiency and productivity.

Alexander Buraev, Director for Long Products and Hardware of the Group, noted that NLMK Kaluga has passed “an important milestone - two million tons of steel”. He thanked the qualified personnel of the enterprise, who, in a short period after the launch, ensured the achievement of design indicators and continues to contribute to the expansion of the product portfolio and supply network. Only within seven months of 2015, the production of corners 100x7, 90x7, 90x6, 63x5 and 63x6, which are in demand in the construction industry, was established. In addition, this year NLMK Kaluga received a DIN 488 certificate, which allows it to supply valves to EU countries.

High production efficiency and a wide range of high-quality products allowed NLMK Kaluga to increase the share of long products in the Central Region to 50 percent. As a result, we managed to squeeze out imported rolled metal products due to more favorable prices and logistics with high quality.

NLMK Kaluga, just six months after commissioning, reached the maximum utilization of its rolling capacities and now maintains this level of utilization regardless of the situation on the steel market. Since the launch of the mini-mill, it has mastered 15 types of long products, which exceeds 20 percent of the entire product portfolio of NLMK Long Products. At present, NLMK Kaluga's product range consists of reinforcing bars No. 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 25 and structural shapes - corners 25x4, 75x6, 63x5, 63x6, 100x7, 90x6 and 90x7. This year it is also planned to expand the assortment due to steel corners 50x5 and 100x9.
