August 24, 1955 is considered to be the birthday of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK), which is part of PJSC Severstal. 60 years ago, on this day, the first pig iron was produced at CherMK.
Over the past 60 years, the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant has produced over 356 million tons of pig iron, 455 million tons of steel and 429 million tons of rolled metal. The plant's products are in demand in all major areas of development of the Russian economy, including construction, energy, mechanical engineering, vehicle production and shipbuilding. The enterprise's clients are more than five thousand Russian and foreign companies.
Throughout its history, CherMK has built new workshops and industrial facilities. The most significant ones are the coke oven battery in 1956, open-hearth production in 1959. After that, new blast furnaces, converters, electric furnaces, rolling mills were put into operation, producing sheet and section steel products.
The Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine is continuously expanding the range of products it sells. In the last few years alone, the plant has mastered 87 new types of metal products for strategically important sectors of the Russian economy. When developing new products, special attention is paid to the creation of production with high added value.
CherMK is not going to be satisfied with what has already been achieved and has planned the implementation of a number of large projects in the coming years. Reconstruction of coke oven battery No. 4 will begin soon, with an estimated cost of over 5 billion rubles. At the end of 2017, Severstal intends to expand its steelmaking production at CherMK by investing over 2.5 billion rubles in the construction of a ladle furnace # 2.
The rolling mill will be complemented by a second grinding ball mill, which is planned to be built next year. These products are in demand in raw material factories. The introduction of the new mill will increase the production of grinding balls by 30 thousand tons per year. Implementation of the project will require an investment of almost 300 million rubles.
The production of flat-rolled products at CherMK in 2017 is planned to increase due to the commissioning of a new continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit with an annual production capacity of 400 thousand tons, as well as the commissioning of a polymer coating unit with an annual production capacity of 200 thousand tons. The project cost exceeds 6 billion rubles.
