Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal has announced the completion of the second phase of expanding its iron ore export capacity as part of its Robe River joint venture in Western Australia. In 1977, the then separate companies Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal began to participate in the project.
The second phase of expanding the export potential of iron ore and the West Angelas mine is a project involving the joint operation of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (Japan) and Rio Tinto (Australia and the UK), one of the world's leading mining companies. As a result, Cape Lambert Port's annual export capacity will increase to more than 200 million tonnes, and the annual output of the West Angelas mine will grow to 35 million tonnes.
The first phase of Cape Lambert's expansion ended in 2013, and supplies of iron ore from the West Angelas mine began in 2002. Through the Robe River joint venture, NSSMC will be able to secure a stable supply and sourcing of iron ore in the future.
