The US is demanding that the government in Athens block Greek airspace for Russian aircraft. Russia uses airspace to fly to Syria. It is now clear that the Greeks have to pay for their salvation from the crisis in euros. The Greek Foreign Ministry confirmed this information.
Russia has a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus and operates regular flights with supplies to the Syrian city of Latakia, which is also located on the country's coast. These flights provide supplies not only for Russian soldiers stationed in Syria and the government in Damascus, but also for the evacuation of Russian troops and their families.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said over the weekend that Russia has never hidden its flights with supplies for the Syrian government. "We have never denied that we supply military equipment to the official authorities in order to fight terrorism," as quoted by Lavrov Reuters.
At the same time, the United States emphasizes that they want to fight against terrorism together with the Russians, but what the Russian intervention in Syria will be should be discussed with the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week, "We want an international coalition against terrorism and extremism," but he also talked about the roles of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt.
