The Mexican Ministry of Economy has begun reviewing existing anti-dumping duties on steel plates supplied from Russia and Ukraine following a complaint from Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (Ahmsa). Low import costs are seen as a key threat to Mexico's steel sector. Companies like Ahmsa have previously had to cut production and jobs as a result of Chinese dumping. The Ministry of Economy has pledged to strengthen anti-dumping protocols to prevent further damage to the industry.
The ministry has also launched an anti-dumping investigation into ferromanganese imports from India. The complaint came from the Mexican ferromanganese producer Minera Autlan, which claims that the imports harm national production. The ministry said the arguments presented by Minera Autlan were strong to suggest that the product was imported at dumped prices between April 2014 and March 2015 and still poses a threat to domestic producers. Ferromanganese is used in steel making.
