NLMK Group Increases Lighting Energy Efficiency by 100%

NLMK Group, the largest steel company in Russia and one of the most efficient metallurgical companies in the world, has summed up the preliminary results of a large-scale project to modernize lighting at Russian plants and enterprises. The multi-year project was carried out in cooperation with the Dutch company Philips.

Energy-saving technologies have reduced energy consumption for lighting by 60 percent. As a result of the introduction of advanced solutions, constant annual savings of almost 500 million rubles were achieved. Annual energy consumption at the Lipetsk site decreased by 15 MW, which is equivalent to 375 million rubles per year.

Since the start of the project in 2010, investments in the modernization of lighting systems have amounted to 636 million rubles. The project for the introduction of modern lighting systems was carried out at the Lipetsk site from 2010 to 2011, at STAGDOK, Stoilensky GOK, Altai-Koks, NSMMZ and Dolomit from 2012 to 2014, at VIZ-Steel and NLMK Hardware in 2015.

The obsolete luminaires have been replaced with highly efficient modern lighting that delivers high performance and efficiency to the fluorescent optical system, while improving sustainability and lifespan. Philips solutions have been used for both general lighting and workplace lighting where special requirements for brightness, overvoltage and color reproduction must be adhered to.

Alexander Starchenko, NLMK's Vice President for Energy, said: “Improving the efficiency of production processes is a strategic goal of NLMK Group. Modern technology is needed to achieve this, and lighting is no exception. We have been working on a project to modernize lighting systems at the Russian enterprises of the Group since 2010 and have achieved a reduction in energy consumption by 21 MW, which is comparable to the power consumption of two residential areas. "
