A rare, impeccably blue 12 carat diamond known as the Blue Moon may soon become the most expensive gemstone ever sold at auction. It is expected to bring in up to $ 55 million when it goes under the Sotheby's hammer on November 11 in Geneva.
To set a world record for the price of an auctioned diamond, Blue Moon must sell for more than $ 46.2 million, higher than the price of the Pink Graff sold in 2010.
In addition, if the stone exceeds that price, then the South African diamond will also be the most expensive blue diamond ever sold, beating the Zoe diamond, which grossed $ 32.6 million in 2014, Sotheby's International Auction House said.
The Blue Moon was polished from a 29.62 carat rough diamond found by Petra Diamonds at the Cullinan mine in South Africa. New York-based Cora International purchased the stone and spent over six months preparing it.
The most expensive blue diamond will be presented at the auction
