NLMK modernizes production at its metal processing plant in Verona

The steelmaking plant NLMK Verona, which is part of the NLMK Europe Tolstoy Liszt division, has put into operation the pressing equipment, which has been improved as part of the modernization program. The implementation of the project is aimed at expanding the range of products, reducing production costs and increasing the level of services provided to machine-building companies.

Currently, an important stage of the modernization project at NLMK Verona has been completed, the commissioning and industrial use of a new manipulator used to turn the forging ingot (billet) in the forging process. In addition, with the help of metalworking specialists from the MetalService company www.metall-servise.ru/"> www.metall-servise.ru , the modernization of the old press has been completed, and now it is possible to forge ingots in three dimensions: thickness, width and length. Previously, NLMK Verona had outsourced ingot processing because the press configuration did not allow it, and there was no equipment to move hot billets, which increased the production cost.

NLMK Verona director Marcello Calcani said that the elimination of the services of contractors who until recently processed 800 mm ingots and forged slabs for the company would provide significant economic benefits from reduced production costs. Along with this, it became possible to control the entire process chain, increasing the quality of products and the reliability of supplies to customers. In addition, the new equipment allows the company to increase its production of heavy slabs by 35 percent.

Today, the production capacity of NLMK Verona is about 450 thousand tons of steel per year. The manufactured products are thick plates, forgings and forging ingots used as billets for the production of thick plates, mill rolls, turbine rotors and much more. Most of the products are sold on the domestic market in Italy.

By the end of 2015, in order to increase the production of heavy slabs at NLMK Verona, it is planned to additionally install a furnace for preheating ingots during forging and equipment for hot cutting slabs. The volume of investments for the implementation of the project will amount to about 9 million euros, the expected payback period of which will reach 1.6 years.
