The Pentagon is preparing a plan to provide military assistance to the Syrian rebels in response to the bombing of Russian aircraft on their positions. This was stated in the Associated Press with reference to its own sources in Washington, RBC reports.
At the same time, the Pentagon realizes the possibility of open confrontation with the armed forces of the Russian Federation in the case of the use of US Air Force fighters to cover the positions of the rebels.
US officials earlier this year made it clear that US-trained rebels would receive air support if attacked by either side of the conflict.
According to AP, about 80 rebels who have completed their training in the United States are currently fighting in Syria.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said he foresees further consultations with Russian officials on air operations.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the American side had offered to use specific international radio frequencies intended for emergency signals by military pilots flying into Syrian airspace, but declined to disclose other details of the talks with the Russian military.
