The American edition of The New York Times announced that the Obama administration is abandoning the Pentagon's program of military training for the Syrian opposition.
"The Obama administration is completing a $ 500 million Pentagon program to train and equip Syrian rebels," the statement said.
The publication notes that administration officials in Washington admitted that the program was unable to create any type of ground combat force capable of influencing the Islamic state in Syria.
The Pentagon is expected to officially announce the end of its military support program for the opposition on Friday.
A senior US Department of Defense official told the newspaper on condition of anonymity that a training center for Syrian rebels will now be located in Turkey.
