The aggregate military spending of ten Southeast Asian states - Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines - will surpass that of the European Union for the first time this year.
The countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are actively preparing for military action in the region and have tripled their spending on the purchase and modernization of weapons over the past 10 years.
Analysts expect total arms spending in Southeast Asia, excluding Myanmar and Brunei, to reach $ 40 billion by 2016. Asian non-ASEAN countries are also actively involved in the arms race in this part of the world.
