November 16, Washington. Doctors from the Metallurgy Department of the National Technical University of North Carolina and specialists from the Department of Materials Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have invented an innovative way to increase the strength of titanium without reducing the ductility of the parent metal.
All developed countries of the world have been working on obtaining a material with similar properties for more than half a century, but so far no one has been able to increase the strength of titanium without increasing its fragility. However, this week an international team led by Dr. Yuntian Zhu succeeded.
“This material will revolutionize all areas of the industry. Its implementation will increase production efficiency tenfold by reducing the wear of structural units. In addition, the use of such a material will have a positive effect on the state of the atmosphere, because after the replacement of standard steel grades with a new type of titanium, the annual consumption of steel products will decrease at least fourfold, with a concomitant decrease in harmful emissions caused by their production, ”says Dr. Yuntian Zhu.
