Indian steel company Tata Steel will cover the roof of its plant in the Netherlands with solar panels. 80,000 panels will generate 22 million kilowatt-hours in the town of Ijmuiden. This amount of electricity would be enough to supply 6,000 households, but for metallurgical production this is less than 1 percent of the demand.
It is not known how much such an undertaking will cost an Indian company.
However, Tata Steel says the company is thus proving its commitment to green technologies and using clean electricity.
The Indian company claims that it does not intend to stop in its "green" initiatives and will continue to implement energy saving technologies.
Today, all gases emitted at the Ijmuiden plant are fed to the neighboring power plant, which supplies the company with electricity. The ultimate goal of Tata Steel is to create more energy than is consumed in the metallurgical process.
