Russia accuses Ukraine of default on debt repayment obligations. Ukraine has not repaid a $ 3 billion loan and outstanding interest of $ 75 million as of December 31, the Russian Finance Ministry said. Thus, Russia is filing a claim in an English court. The Russian government claims that Ukraine is in bad faith in its debt restructuring negotiations.
In 2013, Russia provided a loan of € 2.7 billion ($ 3 billion). Ukraine is asking Russia for a 20 percent discount on its debt, which was provided to the country by other private creditors. Moscow, however, insists that the debt be repaid in full and maximizes the stretch of the maturity.
Due to Ukraine's de facto bankruptcy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amended its lending rules in December to continue to provide financial support to Kiev. And Yatsenyuk said that Kiev is ready for a legal battle with Russia.
