India was the only major steel producer to record a positive trend in steel production and consumption last year.
While global crude steel production declined 2.8 percent in 2015, for the first time since 2009, steel production in India rose 2.6 percent to 89.6 million tonnes during the year, according to a report by the World Steel Association. At the same time, China, the world's largest producer and consumer of steel, reached 803.8 million tonnes in 2015, down 2.3 percent from 2014, the report said.
India remains the only major steel producer, including China, Japan, South Korea and the United States, to record positive steel production and consumption in the past year.
In 2015, India also became the third largest producer of crude steel, with a share of 5.5 percent of total global production, behind only Japan at 6.5 percent and China at 49.5 percent.
