The European Commission will ask EU member states for a mandate to negotiate with Russia on the planned Nord Stream -2 gas pipeline. The European Commission stated that the negotiations should concern the application of the principles of EU law on the offshore section of the main pipeline.
Some MEPs of the EU member states want to dispel doubts that the Commission intends to apply actions contrary to EU legislation to the offshore section of the Russian pipeline Nord 2.
This means that the company will be forced to provide access to Nord Stream 2 to other suppliers and Gazprom's own supply through this pipeline could be reduced by up to 50 percent.
“As for the offshore section of the pipeline, it cannot be built or operated only under the law of a third country or in a legal vacuum. The issuance of a permit for a specific pipeline, in our opinion, should be coordinated with the legal regime for the maritime region, ”announced Marosz Szefczovicz, deputy head of the Energy Union Committee.
