Brazil's Vale SA, the world's largest iron ore producer, said its production in the third quarter hit a new quarterly record, boosted by increased output at its S11D mine.
Iron ore production rose 3.3 percent year-over-year to 95.1 million tonnes, the company said, driven by record quarterly production in the so-called Vale northern system, which includes the Carajas, Serra Leste mines. and S11D in the state of Pará.
Output from these mines jumped 16.4 percent to 45 million tonnes as the S11D, which began selling ore this year, is progressing "on schedule," the company said. Pellet production rose 21.5% to 12.2 million tonnes in the last quarter over the prior year.
The company stuck to its forecast that total iron ore production in 2017 would approach the lower end of the range of 360 to 380 million tonnes.
