Ukraine, which had not bought gas from Russia for more than two years, could have purchased it, but on condition that the fuel collection point was located in the east, and not on the western border of Ukraine, as Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Kistion said.
If the entry point is moved to the eastern border, it could be considered, Kistion said in an interview published Monday in the online newspaper European Truth.
In September, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that Kiev wants, after the expiration of the contract with Gazprom, for the EU countries to buy gas from him on the eastern border of Ukraine.
Poroshenko explained that Ukraine wants to sell transit services to EU countries, not Russia. European companies that will purchase Russian gas on the eastern border of Ukraine can then store it in Ukrainian underground reservoirs.
Ukraine currently buys gas from Gazprom, but consumes gas of its own production, raw materials and purchased in the West and sent back to the country as part of the so-called reverse.
In 2019, Russia intends to complete the construction of Nord Stream 2 (Nord Stream 2), which is to be built on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, parallel to the Nord Stream gas pipeline operating in 2011 and will lead to Germany. After the pipeline is put into operation, Moscow plans to stop gas transmission operations passing through the territory of Ukraine. The construction of Nord Stream 2 runs counter to the interests of Poland, the Baltic countries and Ukraine.
Ukraine has decided on the conditions for the resumption of purchases of gas from Russia
