Up to 3 percent of GDP could be lost by Ukraine in connection with the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by Russia, as US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch said at a conference in Kiev.
Nord Stream 2 will cut gas transportation through Ukraine. The US ambassador said this could lead to a loss of up to 3 percent of the country's GDP. According to her findings, this means that the Ukrainian budget may lose about $ 2.7 billion a year.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is to be laid along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, in parallel with the Nord Stream gas pipeline, launched in 2011 and heading from Russia to Germany. Its construction is scheduled to start in 2018 and finish in 2019.
After putting the pipeline into operation, Russia intends to stop the transmission of pipelines through the territory of Ukraine. The construction of Nord Stream 2 runs counter to interests in Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine.
