Latin America data for the first eight months of 2017 showed a 5% increase in consumption, while steel and finished goods production rose 8% and 3%, respectively, over the same period last year. Better global and regional economic conditions affected.
However, imports increased by 14%, influenced by regional consumption, which accounts for 33% of these imports, an increase of three percentage points over the same months in 2016 (30%). For its part, the trade balance of the region remains negative, the deficit of which increased by 18% compared to January-August 2016.
In January-August 2017, 42.4 million tons of steel were smelted in the region, which is 8% more than the volume recorded in the same period in 2016 (39.3 million tons). Brazil remains the main producer in the region with 53% of regional production (22.5 million tonnes), up 9% from the first eight months of 2016.
During the same period, finished steel production reached 35.1 million tonnes, which is 3% higher than in January-August 2016. The main producers were Brazil with 14.7 million tonnes (which accounted for 42% of Latin American production) and Mexico with 12.6 million tonnes (with 36% regional production).
