The price of the premium for CO2 emissions may rise in a few months to 10-12 euros per tonne. This is a big increase over current prices. France and Germany are pushing for higher CO2 prices in the EU.
Analysts at the Brokerage House BZ WBK note that the price of CO2 emissions has increased significantly in recent months. Back in May of this year, they paid 4 euros per tonne of CO2. As of November 3, the German EEX has estimated a tonne of CO2 at 7.82 euros.
This means that CO2 prices have risen by almost 100 percent since May. If CO2 prices rise to around € 12, this will be an additional 100 percent over May prices.
Further pricing of CO2 emissions remains largely unknown due to the United States' decision to withdraw from the climate agreement. It seems that both Germany, and above all France, will insist on maximizing CO2 prices, notes DM BZ WBK. Pressure from the European Union is expected to increase as well.
The report stresses that if CO2 emission limits are lowered in the future, the EU could easily raise emission allowances to much higher levels than at present.
