Deputy Finance Minister Matusz Morawiecki said at the Warsaw Security Forum on Wednesday: "We believe that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be geopolitical and could lead to aggravation of conflicts in the EU." Morawiecki stressed that "we want peace, but at the same time we want politics and geopolitics to strengthen our positions."
He added: "... our initiative is aimed at building a coalition of states in cooperation with Western Europe and (...) in cooperation with the United States."
Nord Stream 2 will be built under the Baltic Sea in parallel with the 2011 Nord Stream gas pipeline. Gazprom's partners in this project are five Western energy concerns: Austrian OMV, German BASF-Wintershall and Uniper (separated from E.On), French Engie and British-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell. The pipeline is expected to be ready by the end of 2019. Then Russia intends to stop sending gas through pipelines passing through Ukraine. The construction of Nord Stream 2 will damage Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine.
The controversy surrounding the proposed Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be a good test that the EU is the legal guarantor of EU treaties and a political body capable of limiting the omnipresence of forces in the EU, in this case Germany.
Poland: Nord Stream 2 pipeline project will be a good test for the EU
