Steel production in October 2017 rose 5.5 percent to 8.65 million tonnes, up from 8.19 million tonnes in the same month last year, according to official data.
India is the third largest steel producer in the world after China and Japan. Now the country is striving to grab second place.
"During April-October 2017, steel production amounted to 58.416 million tons, which is 4.7% more than in the same period last year," - says the report of the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) under the Ministry of Steel.
“SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL and JSPL together produced 33.515 million tonnes,” the report said, adding that the remaining 24.901 MT came from other producers.
In April-October (since the beginning of the fiscal year), steel production totaled 38.129 million tonnes, registering an increase of 1.1 percent over the same period last year, the JPC said in its report.
During the seven-month period, the country's pig iron production amounted to 5,353 tons, which is 2.9 percent less than in the same period last year. Total pig iron production last month was 0.777 tonnes, down 0.8 percent from September 2017 and 3.1 percent down from October 2016.
