China's largest steel province, Hebei, plans to cut about 20 million tonnes of its steel production capacity between 2018 and 2020, the provincial government said in a statement on its Weibo Twitter account on Friday.
Hebei, which accounts for nearly a quarter of China's total steel production, is aiming to reduce its metallurgical capacity to 200 million tons by 2020, the province said in a statement.
In addition, the provincial government plans to cut its annual coal production by about 26 million tons to 70 million tons over the same period.
China aims to reduce its total steel capacity by 100-150 million tons during 2016-2020.
Hebei, home to six of China's 10 largest industrial cities, is at the forefront of the country's war against smog. The province is shutting down its industrial plants, including steel mills and aluminum smelters, in an effort to halve steel output in the fall and winter.
