Metinvest unveils environmental modernization projects for Ilyich Steel Plant in Mariupol

On December 14, independent experts, representatives of the city administration and local public organizations got acquainted with the progress of the ecological modernization of the sinter-blast furnace and converter production at the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works.

As part of the reconstruction of the plant's sinter plant, the existing gas purifiers are being replaced in the sintering zone of sinter shells No. 1 and No. 2 and the cooling zone of sinter body No. 2. Overhaul of sintering machines No. 1-7 with the installation of Italian cyclones HARRICLONE - the first stage of cleaning industrial gases from dust. The construction of a complex for purification of flue gases from sulfur compounds, as well as the installation of cyclones and bag filters for sintering machines No. 7-9 is underway.

Replacement of old gas purifiers with new cyclones, installation of bag filters and construction of a desulfurization system will reduce dust emissions in Mariupol by 40%. The expected decrease in dust emissions at the plant itself will be 91%, and the concentration of sulfur compounds in sinter gases will decrease to 43%.

Metinvest Group is investing more than UAH 2.4 billion in the reconstruction of the sinter plant at the Ilyich Steel Plant. In addition, by 2021, the company will allocate more than UAH 1.4 billion for the implementation of environmental programs at the enterprise.

The experts also got acquainted with the progress of work on the construction site of the CCM complex No. 4. At the facility, a large-scale assembly of metal structures and the roof of the substation is underway, as well as the installation of modern gas cleaning metal structures. Concrete work continues, construction of a transformer substation for a ladle-furnace unit and a water management unit. Austrian technologies will make it possible to purify flue gases with an efficiency of up to 98.7%.

After getting acquainted with industrial facilities, the participants of the working meeting discussed the implementation of the Program for the protection and improvement of the environment of Mariupol, as well as the most pressing environmental problems of the city.
