The possible return of the Social Democrats to the German government increases the chances of the existence of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.
Until last month, some high-ranking officials from the German Foreign Ministry had expected that priority for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Nord Stream 2, would collapse. The Greens and the FDP, who were supposed to form a coalition with Christian Democrats, are skeptical of the Russian project.
“A strong signal of disapproval from the new German government could stop the project. Such a signal will force European supporters, among whom listed companies, at the very least, will have to reconsider their commitments. Such a move by a leading political player in the EU could also lead politicians and regulators from outside Germany to take a more critical approach, ”notes the Politico website in Brussels.
In an updated version of the material that was originally released last week, author Matthew Karnichnig emphasizes that the controversial plans to create a second string in the Baltic Sea have run into serious complications over the past few years, but then the project has come to life again.
The portal writes that some German officials have said they hope to use Nord Stream 2 as a bargaining chip in the deal with Poland. “In exchange for stopping Nord Stream 2, Berlin wanted Warsaw to abandon its claims for war reparations from Poland after World War II,” says Karnichnig.
