Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp, the largest steelmaker in Japan, expects steel demand to remain strong globally in 2018, including in top consumer China, the company president said.
“I am not worried about the economic slowdown in China after the fall Congress of the Communist Party,” said Nippon Steel President Kosei Shindo. “I also have no problem with the Chinese economy next year,” he said.
Shindou said Nippon Steel renewed its five-year alliance contract with Kobe Steel Ltd in November after some 500 of its customers received products with falsified specifications, leading to global supply chain turmoil. Nippon Steel owns 2.95% of Kobe Steel, which is at the center of a data-falsification scandal that has rocked Japan's manufacturing industry. “Our alliance will not change,” Shindou said.
