Polish Gas-Sistema received a location decision for a gas connection between Poland and Lithuania. This will be the main point of the gas pipeline for Poland, Lithuania, which is important for the European Union. The merger will enhance the region's energy security, and the entire 515 km gas pipeline will be commissioned in 2022.
We are talking about the 185-kilometer northern part of the gas pipeline between Poland and Lithuania. This is crucial because of the need to integrate the transmission systems of the Baltic states into the structures of the European Union gas pipelines. These countries are very closely associated with Russia as a result of historical events. However, the legacy of the USSR is not favorable for reasons of security of supplies, according to the leadership of the Baltic states and Poland. Hence the need for a connection on the border with Poland.
“Connecting gas to Lithuania is important for the integration of the European gas system. This will contribute to the emergence of a liberalized gas market in northeastern Europe. Thanks to this, the so-called “Energy Islands” or regions that depend on gas supplies from only one direction will be more secure in gas supply, ”says Thomas Stepin, President of Gaz-Sistema.
