Trump-initiated US steel imports study

Trump issued a presidential memo on April 20 instructing the commercial secretary to conduct an investigation "to determine the impact on the national security of steel imports."

The Commerce Department submitted its Section 232 report on steel imports to President Donald Trump in January, but the results and recommendations have yet to be released.

Trump has 90 days from the time he received the report to decide what, if any action, to take. (The report will also be published in 90 days.) Trump previously indicated that he would like to introduce tariffs or quotas on imported steel.

AIIS is actively working to educate regulators, legislators, the press and the public about the negative consequences that could arise from the introduction of new restrictions on the free trade in steel. In a letter to the editor published on the American Metals Market on February 1, AIIS Executive Director Richard Criss warned of the "disastrous consequences" that the restrictions on steel imports "would have a negative impact on the country's defense and economic well-being, as well as global stability and prosperity." ...
