Brussels has extended anti-dumping duties to Chinese seamless stainless steel pipes over the next five years. Additional fees, which were introduced in 2011, range from 48.3 to 71.9 percent.
The European Commission stressed in its message that its decision provides a level playing field for EU manufacturers, including companies from France, Spain and Sweden.
"An investigation launched in December 2016 showed that dumping in China continues, and if the measures (protective - red) are lifted, significant volumes of China's subsidized exports could be directed to the EU market," the European Commission said in a press release. It is for this reason that anti-dumping duties will be maintained at their current level.
The European steel sector has been under pressure for several years due to overproduction and lower prices. Currently, the European Union has 53 anti-dumping measures in the production of steel and iron, of which 27 are for products from China.
The EU steel industry, which is struggling to flood the European market for subsidized steel from China, could also be hit by tariffs announced by the United States on steel and aluminum imports. On Wednesday (March 7), the College of Commissioners of the EU will talk about Washington's intentions in this matter.
