The US may decide to enter into bilateral trade agreements on steel and aluminum tariffs, which is one option, said Charles de Lusignan, a spokesman for the European Steel Association EUROFER.
Lusignan explained that US President Donald Trump has already mentioned that allied countries that contribute at least 2 percent of GDP for defense within NATO will be treated on a concessional basis in the future.
He also recalled that negotiations are currently underway between the United States and the European Union regarding US measures. EUROFER believes that it is important for European countries to have a common representation in a dispute with the United States.
On Thursday, Trump signed a decree imposing a 25% duty on steel imports and 10% on aluminum. Products from Canada and Mexico will be subject to the new tax until NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) is renegotiated.
American trading partners have threatened to introduce their counter tariffs. Canada, Mexico, the European Union announced a "strong reaction" to US tariffs and filed applications to initiate proceedings against the US with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The President referred to the 1962 Cold War situation, which allows him to restrict imports and impose unlimited tariffs if national security is at stake.
