French Minister of Economy Le Maire demanded on Tuesday, at the end of the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires, the exclusion of France from the United States of tariffs on steel and aluminum without any conditions.
“Let's say it's clear that there can be no demand from the United States for the exemption from import tariffs from the program,” Le-Meir said.
“We are simply explaining to our American friends that the decision they want to make is wrong,” he stressed.
Earlier, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said that the vast majority of attendees at the Buenos Aires meeting are worried about escalating international trade tensions over US tariffs.
On March 8, United States President Donald Trump signed a National Security Protection Regulation and a decree imposing a 25 percent duty on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.
US customs duties are due to take effect on March 23rd. EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroy is in talks with US Commerce Secretary Wilburek Ross in Washington in hopes of removing the EU from the tariff program.
