Russia has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to recover damages caused by the US import duties imposed by the administration of President Donald Trump on steel and aluminum.
WTO members may not comply with certain WTO rules if they prove that they impose tariffs only to ensure national security.
However, the European Union, China and India have already applied to the WTO for compensation from the United States over tariffs on rolled steel and aluminum. The United States has announced that it will negotiate with these countries, but maintains that their claims are unsubstantiated.
The complaining parties argue that the tariffs imposed by Trump are a mechanism that protects the domestic steel industry, and therefore the affected countries should receive compensation.
