The Egyptian Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has received four applications for new licenses for steel plants. Among them is an Arab company that currently does not produce steel in Egypt.
Several Egyptian press reports earlier this month suggested that one of the applicants is Emirates Steel (ESI), based in Abu Dhabi. The manufacturer is looking at Borg Al Arab near Alexandria, or Sadat City, as possible locations for new steel mills. Sadat City is home to the ESR Steel ESR rebar and Beshay Steel's newly established Egyptian Iron and Steel Factory (Esisco).
However, an IDA source says it is too early to identify license applicants. Two licenses are for existing steel mill extensions, and the other two are for new field installations.
The Saudi Metals Company (Hadeed) and Rajhi Steel said they recently approved supplies of rebar to Egypt. This follows the recent launch of Ain Sokhna's Egyptian steel rebar steel mills.
Sales of Egyptian rebar in January-February rose 46% to 1.3 million tonnes, while rebar production rose 61% to 1.46 million tonnes, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).
