The introduction of 25 percent tariffs on steel imported into the United States pushed local producers to increase prices. They have grown so much that, despite the tariffs, American steel is again more expensive than imported steel.
According to MEPS International, flat steel prices in the United States have risen 34 percent since the beginning of the year. At the same time, in Western Europe, dollar prices rose by 3.5 percent, and in Asia - by 6.5 percent.
Importers are keeping prices at the previous level, which means that after adding 25% duty, they could be competitive against US producers who are overpricing. MEPS International notes that this was not the goal of the so-called section 232 (closing the US market at protective tariffs). If US manufacturers want to take advantage of tariffs, they will have to reassess their pricing policy.
Imported steel in the US is still doing well
