The European Commission has confirmed that member states, meeting last week to discuss possible new tariffs on steel imports, have provided "... overwhelming support" to the commission's plan.
The new interim measures are due to take effect next week. They must include a 25% duty after the quota is exceeded. The quota is expected to be calculated at the overall EU level, rather than on a per-country basis, as previously requested by Eurofer.
“Based on its investigation to date, the Commission believes that interim measures are warranted,” the commission said in a statement released late last week. “The most recent import statistics show that the diversion of steel products trade in the EU resulted from an additional 25% of the steel tariff imposed by the US.
The investigation will continue until at least the end of 2018. The Commission has also set up an aluminum import surveillance system that will track the sector.
