The market outlook for stainless steel will continue to support demand for chromium concentrate in the metals sector, according to a report by Tharisa, Cyprus headquartered in Tiras.
The company maintains its guidelines for the fiscal year through September 2018, with plans to increase production to 2 million tonnes in 2020.
Tharisa, whose mines and concentrates are located in South Africa, reported a 2.6% increase in chromium concentrate production in the fourth quarter to a record 376.3 kt in June. These chromium concentrates accounted for 25.3% of the production.
Chromium production in the nine months to June was up 14% year-on-year to 1.11 million tonnes, of which 24.2% was specialty chrome.
Earlier this year, Tharisa bought 90% of Salene Chrome in Zimbabwe. The firm says it has made significant progress in securing regulatory approvals, after which planned exploration programs in Zimbabwe will begin. It is the firm's first asset outside of South Africa to diversify its revenue streams.
