Kobe Steel Ltd, the third largest steel company in Japan, has charged Tokyo prosecutors with alleged violations of the Unfair Competition Law in Japan, Kobe Steel said in a statement.
The crux of the problem Kobe Steel, which supplies steel and aluminum parts to aircraft, train and car manufacturers around the world, allows products with falsified quality specifications to be supplied to over 600 customers. That being said, data fraud has gone on for nearly five decades.
“We take this issue very seriously. The entire Kobe Steel Group is sincerely and honestly working on preventive measures and working hard to restore confidence, ”the statement said.
The scandal that led to similar revelations from a number of other companies undermined confidence in Japan's industrial sector. Kobe Steel is also the subject of a study by the United States Department of Justice.
