Exports of finished steel from China in December reached 5.556 million tons, up 4.9% from the previous month, but 2% less than the previous year, preliminary data released Monday by the General Administration of Customs showed.
Exports rebounded in December after falling for two straight months as overseas orders in October and November improved in tandem with the fall in Chinese steel prices.
In 2018, China's steel exports amounted to 69.336 million tons, which is 8.1% less than in 2017.
Steel imports in December totaled 1.006 million tons, down 4.2% from November and 16.2% year on year.
In 2018, steel imports decreased by 1% year-on-year to 13.166 million tonnes.
Net steel exports in December totaled 4.55 million tonnes, an increase of 7.1% year on year and 1.8% year on year. In 2018, net steel exports fell 9.6% year on year to 56.17 million tonnes.
