Hebei Province, China's main iron and steel production base, plans to cut its capacity by 14 million tonnes this year, its governor announced on Monday.
Xu Qin made the announcement on Monday when he gave a presentation on the work of the government at the opening of the local legislative session.
Xu said that among his prefectural cities, Zhangjiakou, which will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and Langfang, which is neighboring Beijing, will be phasing out the iron and steel industry.
Other efforts to tackle overcapacity this year include cuts in coal by 10 million tons, coke by 3 million tons and coal-fired power plants by 500,000 kW, he said.
Hebei and several other areas around Beijing are home to major steel producers, coal mines and chemical plants. They are at the forefront of the country's fight against air pollution.
According to the report, Hebei cut its steel production capacity by 12.3 million tonnes, coal by 14 million tonnes and cement by 3.13 million tonnes in 2018, which not only helped to achieve the nationwide goal of quality economic growth, but also helped improve air quality.
