The US Department of Commerce has launched an investigation into whether companies are circumventing anti-dumping and countervailing duties on steel bars from Mexico by bending the product "on one or both sides." The Department of Commerce press release announcing the request does not indicate which companies are being investigated. Mexico was the fourth largest foreign supplier of steel rebar in 2018. Rebar imports from Mexico in 2018 were estimated at US $ 51 million.
Port of Laredo, Port of Houston and El Paso, Texas account for about 70% of Mexican rebar imports entering the United States.
The latest request for rebar is the second time in the past five years that the Commerce Department has examined Mexican companies for possible rebar dumping in the US market.
The department also recently explored Turkey, but determined that there was no rebar release.
The latest case with the US Department of Commerce was reported by the Rebar Trade Coalition. Rebar Trading Coalition members include: Byer Steel Group, Inc., Cincinnati, OH; Commercial Metals Co., Irving, TX; Gerdau Armisteel US, Inc., Tampa, Florida; Nucor Corp. from Charlotte, North Carolina; and Steel Dynamics, Inc., Pittsboro, Indiana.
Over the past five years, the Rebar Trade Coalition has filed lawsuits against Mexico, Turkey, Japan and Taiwan.
