SteelAsia will expand its activities and employ 20 thousand workers

SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., recently announced an expansion in the Philippines and will need more than 20,000 employees.

SteelAsia President and CEO Benjamin Yao announced that the company plans to establish three to five steel mills across the country over the next three years to meet the needs of the country's growing economy.

And with a looming production skills shortage in the country, the company is partnering with Germany's Badische Stahl-Engineering GmbH (BSE) to design and develop curricula for its world-class training center, which will open in the second quarter of the year.

Yao said the company has engaged the BSE to ensure that the training center for future SteelAsia employees will apply the world's best practices.

“We believe that we are in a better position to determine the type of skills required for our operations. With the rapid growth of SteelAsia, we must ensure that we have the competent and skilled workforce required in our manufacturing facilities. And the training center with the help of the best in the world - BSE - will allow us to achieve this goal, ”he said.

“Through this training center located in the south of Luzon, we not only meet the company's workforce needs, but also hope to provide skills training and job opportunities for unemployed people near our factories, even if they are not qualified,” added Yao.

SteelAsia dispatched several employees, including plant engineers and technicians, to the BSW Anlagenbau und Ausbildung GmbH (BAG) training center in Kehl, Germany for two weeks to gain first-hand experience of the training center's programs, processes and facilities.

BSE is a service provider to improve efficiency and productivity in the steel industry worldwide. Yao said SteelAsia has also contacted other technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions such as DualTech and Toyota Motor Philippines School of Technology to gain even more best practices and expertise in training center management.

He noted that the company has consulted with government agencies such as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on the operational requirements and enrichment of the training center's curriculum.
