Liberty Steel continues to speculate on the future of the Georgetown smelter as it tries to balance financial realities with the goal of bringing production back to full capacity. Liberty Steel Georgetown closed the store in September, saying it would need to invest $ 25 million to replace obsolete equipment when the plant reaches its half-century mark. Among the planned works: a new electric arc furnace; improvement of water supply and gas pipelines; new electrical system; and strengthening the foundation of the building. This work has not yet begun.
The mill is still producing wire rod, taking steel from its sister plant in Peoria and processing it at a hot rolling mill in Georgetown.
Meanwhile, some of the mill's roughly 150 workers spend their days landscaping and dismantling an old direct-reduction iron ore plant that neighbors call Brow. This is all an attempt to avoid laying off employees, even if they are not actively making steel.
