Metalloinvest has completed the modernization of electric arc furnaces (FMF) as part of the comprehensive strategic development program for Ural Steel in the electric arc furnace shop of the plant. The furnaces were commissioned after refurbishment using the unique flexible modular furnace technology. During his visit to Ural Steel on March 4, the Governor of the Orenburg Region Denis Pasler had the opportunity to get acquainted with the operation of the furnaces. The furnaces were put into pilot operation in 2019. Since then, the furnaces have produced over 600,000 tons of high quality steel.
FMF technology makes it possible to produce steel using the converter method without the use of electrodes or electrical energy. Any components of the charge (hot metal, cast iron, HBI, scrap) can be used in the FMF furnace with the possibility of increasing the proportion of hot metal in the charge up to 85%. The benefits of FMF technology include using the energy generated by a chemical reaction to melt the solids in the batch, which reduces energy consumption and minimizes waste gas emissions.
Tenova, a multinational company specializing in innovative solutions for the metals and mining industry, provided refurbishment technology for furnaces # 1 and # 2.
