Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal has announced its decision to temporarily halt production at its facilities in Italy. The company has decided to close several businesses in the country due to the devastating coronavirus outbreak in the country, which has already claimed thousands of lives.
According to the company, shutdowns are already taking place at several facilities, and they will be fully implemented by next week. Cutting production at the Taranto plant will cut the workforce by nearly 50%. The planned shutdowns will affect blast furnace # 2, steel mill # 1, hot rolling mill # 1 and cold rolling mill, the company said in a press release.
Last week, the company announced its intention to cut plant operations by 25%. Meanwhile, the trade unions did not demand halt production at all facilities until March 25 in order to disinfect the plant and its surroundings. At the moment, however, it is completely unclear how long the shutdowns may continue as the virus continues to spread across Europe.
In addition, ArcelorMittal has decided to postpone the reopening of the blast furnace at its smelter in Krakow, Poland.
