US Steel may be idle indefinitely at its Texas and Ohio steel mills as a result of difficult market conditions and high levels of imports. The company issued adjustment and retraining notices to workers at its Lone Star Texas and Lorain Ohio mills, which said downtime-related layoffs could take effect in as little as 60 days.
Spokeswoman Megan Cox said: “Any remaining orders for non-performing facilities could result in some move to one of US Steel's other pipe mills. The regulation of operations could affect approximately 600 Lone Star Tubular Operations employees. Lorain Tubular Operations has a potential impact of around 250 employees. Although we do not expect to lay off so many employees,
US Steel Lone Star Tubular Operations in Lone Star specializes in the manufacture of welded electrowelded tubular products, while the Lorain factory produces high quality seamless seamless pipes.
