The state-owned Ukrainian grain firm DPZKU has stocks of about 100,000 tons of wheat in stock and is ready to meet domestic needs for flour amid growing demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the company said on Tuesday.
Ukrainian bakers and bakeries last week asked the government to restrict the export of grain and related products to support bread prices in the event of the spread of the coronavirus.
The Ministry of Economy said it would control wheat exports, sell flour on the domestic market and agree with traders on the maximum amount of wheat for export.
“The stocks of milling wheat in the DPZKU silos are more than 100,000 tons. If necessary, this grain can be sent for processing to sell flour on the domestic market of Ukraine, ”the company said in a statement.
The company is capable of producing 1000 tons of flour per day.
Although Ukraine is a major exporter of grain and its harvests largely exceed domestic consumption, the coronavirus pandemic has forced some countries to consider export restrictions.
The Ukrainian trade union of major traders, UGA, said this week that it agrees with the Ministry of Economy's proposal to limit wheat exports to 20.2 million tons in the 2019/20 season to avoid rising domestic bread prices.
Ukraine has already exported about 18 million tons of wheat this season.
Ukraine will leave 100,000 tons of wheat for domestic needs
