British Steel will resume operations in Northern Ireland

British Steel has announced the resumption of production at its plants in Skinningrove in the UK and Lisburn in Northern Ireland.

British Steel CEO Ron Deehlen said: “Three weeks ago we suspended production at our Special Profiles facility in Skinningrove, laying off about 300 employees as we adjusted to challenging market conditions.

Although the market remains challenging, we are now more confident in our ability to navigate this situation and produce the required volumes of special profiles. Therefore, I am pleased to confirm that these employees are returning to work and production will resume in Skinningrove on Monday 27 April. The small number of employees who were laid off at our service center in Lisburn will also return to work in phases soon. I would like to welcome our staff to Skinningrove and Lisburn and thank them for their understanding during a difficult time for myself and my families. I would also like to thank the staff for ensuring that we can continue to operate safely in our other locations. With appropriate precautions, we are supporting production at our Scunthorpe and Teesside Beam Mill sites, including our two blast furnaces. The continued support from the government, our customers and our suppliers is also highly appreciated. British Steel has not suspended operations at its other UK site, including Luckenby and Darlington.
