Unions representing workers at the Ilva metallurgical plant in southern Italy went on strike on Tuesday to protest ArcelorMittal's reports of plans to cut thousands of jobs at the site. The call from unions FIM, FIOM and UILM came after Industry Minister Stefano Patuanelli accused the group of not complying with the terms of a bailout agreement signed with the government in March.
Patuanelli said Saturday that the industrial plan presented by the group last week is inconsistent with the March agreement and that ArcelorMittal appears to be using the COVID-19 emergency as an excuse for not sticking to the agreement.
Under the agreement, ArcelorMittal agreed to suspend plans to leave the plant in the southern city of Taranto, which it acquired in 2018, in exchange for a substantial injection of government funding. Italian media reported over the weekend that a new industrial plan unveiled 5,000 job cuts entered the government late Friday night. An ArcelorMittal spokeswoman confirmed that the group presented the plan, but declined to provide details.
