JSW Steel USA has sent out layoff notices to 160 workers at its Mingo Junction plant as the company plans to temporarily close due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The notice of adjustment and retraining of workers was sent to announce the temporary cessation of production at the enterprise due to unforeseen circumstances in business during the COVID-19 crisis. The company blames the business circumstances the steel industry is facing for not being reasonably foreseeable due to the lack of prior notice of layoffs. The first set of layoffs will begin on July 17 and end around July 31, 2020. The second set of layoffs will begin on or around August 1 and end on or around August 15, 2020.
The company told employees it hopes the layoffs will be temporary and will last less than six months.
It is not known how many people work at the plant, or if 160 employees are its entire workforce.
In December 2018, company officials said they plan to hire 1,000 people at the Mingo Junction plant, which JSW Steel recently opened in Ohio. Company officials could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
